Positive Affirmations

Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome negative thoughts. For those new to using affirmations, it may seem strange to start with but the use of positive affirmations are based on well-established psychological theory. The key thing is to believe in them and repeat them often to help to reprogram our thinking patterns. A bit like doing repetitive exercise to improve our physical health.

You can use affirmations in any situation where you’d like to make a positive change. This could include personal habits, to control negative behaviours or improve your confidence. The good news is that it can be done easily and discreetly – simply repeat them to yourself regularly, especially when negative thoughts begin to creep in.

You can find many ideas for writing your own affirmations online including ones from renowned authors. One of our favourites’ is “If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely,” by children’s author Roald Dahl in his book “The Twits”. But they don’t need to be sophisticated and can be simple as ‘My best is good enough’ to help release unnecessary pressure we can often put on ourselves in certain situations.

You can start by printing some of the relevant affirmations on this page and display them somewhere obvious in your home, such as the fridge, to say to yourself.

You can also download a copy of the affirmation “You are Enough” to use as your wallpaper on your computer here.
